Want some new books to read?

Have you read the award winning books that just arrived in the media center?  A Year Down Under by Richard Peck won the Newbery Award Winner for 2000.   This book  is set in rural Illinois during the depression when Mary Alice leaves Chicago to spend a year with Grandma Dowdel. Her first fears about spending life in a small town with an old woman gradually change to admiration and love as she recognizes the warm heart behind Grandma's crazy actions.
Also new are the Newbery Honor Books for 2000.  Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is a story about a stray dog who appears almost magically in the midst of the produce section of the Winn-Dixie grocery store, The dog leads a young girl, India Opal Buloni, from one new friend to the next in a small Florida town as she finds out what families really are.  Another honor book is Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer This is the story of Hope and her aunt and their move to a small town in Wisconsin where Hope encounters all kinds of situations such as corruption in politics, a new love, serious illness and the meaning of family. Joey Pigza Loses Control by Jack Gantos is another Honor Book.  Joey spends the summer with his estranged father and wants the two of them to be winners together, but Joey's life still remains out of balance.  The final Honor Book for 2000 is not a new one in our library.  The Wanderer by Sharon Creech is about Sophie who sails across the Atlantic with her uncles and cousins begins a journey of self discovery.
