Football

Michigan is fortunate enough to have at least one team in every level of football that exists. From the small children in the various Rocket Football programs around the state to the professionals of the Detroit Lions, many young men take to the gridiron each week to defend their pride and their team.

During the fall season in many towns in Michigan, you will notice something a little different. Along with the festivals of the fall season there is an air of excitement traveling through the towns as the whole state prepares for the high school football season. Players don their practice gear in early August to take to the field in the hopes of competing with the best in the state playoffs later in the season. College football in Michigan covers a widespread area of both land and school size. From Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan on the north tip of the Upper Peninsula to Ann Arbor and East Lansing in the Lower Peninsula, there is always a college football game near you. There are many Division I schools in Michigan including the famous rivalry between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans. Other teams include Central Michigan University, Hope College, Alma College, and various other private and public universities.

Although sometimes not always proud to admit it, Michigan is home to the NFL team the Detroit Lions. Centered in Pontiac, a suburb of Detroit, the Lions have been drawing good crowds these past few years with their unpredictability on the field.

The newest addition is the Michigan Football League, a semi-pro league that was formed in 1989 and currently has five teams, which include the Detroit Seminoles, Flint Falcons, and the West Michigan Storm.
