Birdwatching

For those of you who enjoy spending a quiet afternoon looking at the wildlife, birdwatching may be for you. With abundant plant life for feed and wide-open spaces to fly, birds naturally love Michigan. From the Red-throated loon to the Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, Michigan is a birdwatcher's fantasy!

Birdwatching has long been thought of as a female-only activity. However, in Michigan, approximately 75% of all birdwatchers are male! There are more than 1,000 serious "birders" in Michigan, and estimates show more than a million "feeders" live here, as well. The recent explosion of birdwatching activity was triggered in 1992 when Mio held its first Kirtland Warbler Festival. (Kirtland Warblers can only be found in Michigan) Michigan birdwatchers range in age from schoolchildren to retirees who watch in their backyards.
