SOS Michigan-Save our SchoolsMichigan’s Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (Michigan ASCD), as an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner, fully endorses the work of Michigan SOS (Save our Students, Schools, and State) in replacing the existing funding formula with a more equitable and stable solution. Michigan’s struggling economy has clearly exposed the inadequacy of the state’s existing formula for funding schools, leaving school districts with difficult choices regarding programs, personnel, professional development, and options for students. Michigan ASCD exists to:

  • Build a more engaged and diverse community to improve learning and teaching for each student.
  • Advocate policies and practices that positively influence learning, teaching and leadership in education.
  • To distribute research-based programs, products, and services that will lead educators to use best practices in learning, teaching, and leadership.

Michigan S.O.S. is committed to:

  1. Fixing the broken school funding system and replace it with one that’s equitable and stable;
  2. Helping districts individually and collectively become more efficient and effective ... help transform education; and
  3. Assisting districts in working with their communities and creating a statewide grassroots network of supporters who can help facilitate change.

As professional educators in Michigan, we clearly and dramatically understand things as they are, possess the means and knowledge to make a difference, and are unwilling to accept the status quo. Rather, we must act now to fundamentally and forever change the set of circumstances facing Michigan’s public schools. Nothing less will do.

Sincerely,
Narda Murphy
Narda Murphy, President, Michigan ASCD

Survey shows states aren't effectively using student data
More states have better systems for tracking student data, but many are not using the data effectively to improve education, according to a survey by the Data Quality Campaign. The report shows that 43 states have taken three or fewer of the 10 steps listed by the DQC as important for using student data effectively. "I applaud the Data Quality Campaign for challenging states to not only develop good data systems, but put them to use," said Education Secretary Arne Duncan in response to the report.

Group begins revision of national science standards
A panel of experts assembled by the National Research Council has begun work on a new set of national science standards for schools. The "next generation" standards will focus science instruction on a smaller number of important concepts and will aim to deepen students' understanding of science in preference to learning disconnected facts and figures. "The research is pretty clear that helping kids answer the right fill-in-the-bubble [questions] doesn't make them science-literate," an NRC official said. "And our goal is, we want a scientifically capable society."
