Eighth Grade Science - Course Overview

 

  • Scientific Method and the Metric System:  We will use the scientific method to conduct experiments and investigations throughout the school year and learn how to convert units within the metric system. 

 

  • Atomic Structure:   We will be studying the structure of an atom, how atoms combine to form compounds and some of the trends in the Periodic Table.  We will also be learning the structures of several common molecules. 

 

  • The Cell:  We will learn the difference between plant and animal cells as well as common cell processes.  We will also learn the structure and function of various organelles and observe cells using a microscope.

 

  • Waves:  We will learn about the properties of mechanical and electromagnetic waves.  We will also study sound and light.

 

  • Forces and Motion:  We will be studying Newton’s Laws of Motion and learning about velocity, acceleration, and momentum.  This unit will prepare us for our trip to Cedar Point this spring. 

 

  • Plate Tectonics:  We will study maps of the earth’s tectonic plates, learn about continental drift, and effects of plate movement including earthquakes and volcanoes. 

 

  • Astronomy:  We will compare our sun to other stars, learn about double stars, and understand ways that scientist know about objects that are very far away.
