History of Kinney School
Kinney School was built in 1889. It was opened as an elementary school until 1983. It closed due to a lack of elementary students. It was used for adult education and preschool until it was remodeled and reopened in 1995 as an elementary again. You can learn more about current things on our main page.

O It was rented from John Kinney.

O It was the first school in Mt. Pleasant.

O There were three Kinney Schools, two of which were destroyed.

O The first year, 20 students were enrolled.

O Ellen Woodworth, the first teacher, made $70.75.

O The first colors were green and white.

O John Kinney charged $16.50 a year for rent.

O In 1882, the superintendent was H.K. Warren.

O Kinney's mascot has always been the Cougar.

O Bill Walters was the principal when Kinney closed.

O When Kinney closed, there were 310 students enrolled.
