Morning Meeting

After ordering lunches and working in Free Centers, we clean up and meet as a group each morning. This Morning Meeting is a chance for sharing information and teaching specific skills. There are lots of combinations of activities for this time. Morning Meeting may consist of any of the following:

Calendar Activities Individuals are responsible for updating calendar information which the group reviews. Lots of math here! We solve math problems, think of different money combinations, do some place value counting, look at calendar patterns, discuss seasonal concerns, and subtract and add numbers to 180 (days in the school year). We usually end our calendar activities with the Pledge to the Flag.

Number of the Day Students really enjoy the challenge of seeing how many questions they can create whose solutions equal the number of the day's date. So if today is December 25, suggestions may range from 10 + 10 + 5 = 25 to There are 25 people in our class to 24 hours in a day plus one more to $25.00 is a $20 bill and a $5 bill.

Review the Day's Agenda This lets children know what to expect, prepare for, and look forward to. Items are checked off as they are completed during the day.

Mystery Message Two or three sentences about the day's activities are put on the board. The mystery is due to the way the words are presented: only the 1st letter of each word and a _ for each missing letter is written! I h--- a p--- a---- b---- t- r--- t- y--. (I have a poem about birds to read to you.) Students volunteer suggestions for the standard spellings of the words and the sentences magically appear! This is a great opportunity to look at patterns and inconsistencies of English spelling.

Daily Editing Each class has a different name for this, but the idea is the same. As an extension of Mystery Message, another two or three sentences are presented with lots of editing challenges. Toda wee r havin A visidor two tak aboud Japan has ben their We try to read the message aloud. Students then suggest corrections until the message is in standard form.

Sharing Because you never know when something really special will happen in a child's life, we have a short Sharing time most every morning. We try to avoid the Bring and Brag syndrome, so we limit the "Share" to either something that relates to our current theme, or an event which has never happened to the child before (like riding a 2 wheeler). We also stress what a good audience does.

All Together Now! We may take time to read a poem or two that the teacher or children select, perhaps act it out, or substitute some new words in key places. Or, some days we may just burst out in a song that someone chooses and then leads. There is always time, too, for listening to a good book - whether it's an old favorite, or something new that relates to the theme. Again, this may be teacher or child choice.
