The Business Information & Technology II class is designed to prepare students for employment opportunities in today's rapidly changing business environment. This program consists with the Michigan Career and Technical Education Program (CTE) within the Business, Management, Marketing, and Technology (BMMT) Pathway. Students will:
- Have an awareness of careers available in the field of business. (CES.2.HS.1) (CES.2.HS.4)
- Receive training in the basic and technological skills necessary to compete for a job in the business world and retain employment (word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation graphics, web publishing, image editing). (TEC.1.HS.6)
- Develop telecommunication skills through the use of e-mail and the Internet. (BITS, 10/01, Business Management and Services Task List)
- Become familiar with the terminology, skills, and equipment used in today's automated work environment. (CES.9.HS.2)
- Receive guidance in the development of ethical conduct, competent work habits, business etiquette, and an appreciation of the dignity of labor and the importance of work well done. (TEC.5.HS.5)
- Have an awareness of the constant change occurring in the business world, which necessitates flexibility and continual retraining. (CES.10.HS.8)
- Create and use a portfolio to use as a marketing tool to demonstrate technology skills acquired. (CES.10.HS.5)
The Business Information & Technology II student will complete competencies in the following areas:
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
- Explain the purposes, functions, and common features of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other multimedia applications
- Demonstrate word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and web publishing skills with applications such as:
- Windows XP
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft FrontPage
- Compose, organize, and edit information using a keyboard
- Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other multimedia applications to create, modify, store, present, and print documents
- Use presentation and multimedia software to design, create, import data/graphics/scanned images/sound/video, edit, format, sequence, and produce a variety of presentations
- Use reference materials, such as on-line help, vendor bulletin boards, tutorials, and manuals available for software
- Further develop touch keyboarding skills at acceptable speed and accuracy levels
SOFTWARE CERTIFICATION
- Demonstrate skills to successfully pass the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Microsoft Word Expert exam (follow link for benchmarks)

DOCUMENT PROCESSING
- Key letters, memos, envelopes
- Key general business reports (agenda, minutes, itinerary, etc.)
- Key a report with footnotes or endnotes, bibliography, table of contents and outline
- Integrate data from spreadsheet, database, graphics, and text into a report for presentation
- Merge word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and/or database files
- Format a document with columns
- Compose letters
- Proofread and edit documents for accuracy, content, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Create an organizational chart and understand its purpose
ELECTRONIC RECORDS MANAGEMENT
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Internet, smart searches, and the tools used to access information
Explain proper ethics and copyright when using the Internet - Describe proper e-mail etiquette
- Demonstrate the use of sending and receiving e-mail messages, voice messages, and faxes effectively
- Describe ways data can be transmitted

- Using HTML or other editors, create personal portfolio website

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
- Evaluate personal career goals, interests, and values
- Explore careers using a variety of resource
- Develop documents to assist with the job-hunting process (resume, cover letter, portfolio, etc.)
- Answer commonly asked interview questions to prepare for an interview
- Develop a portfolio which includes a resume, sample cover letter, awards, extracurricular activities, community service involvement, and examples of work and technical skills
- Develop portfolio presentation skills
- Demonstrate appropriate interviewing techniques by participating in a mock interview; students’ evaluate their own performance by watching their own videotape
- Explain the importance of interview follow-up
