Directories, also known as Web indexes, allow you to look for information by
categories, such as sports, current events, music, etc. You can click main
categories which will then take you to subcategories, and maybe even more
subcategories. Yahoo!, which is often confused as a search engine,
is really a Web index/directory. While it does let you do a search by
typing in a keyword yourself, the sites that are included are submitted for
approval rather than automatically included with a robot program. Some
directories are done by professional organizations, while others are done by
commercial groups. Using a directory
done by librarians, teachers, and other experts who are qualified will usually
increase your success in finding authentic and valuable information on the Web.
