The Evil Michigan Scanner Law

This law says that it is illegal to transport (law says equip which is being enforced as transport, even in your trunk with the the batteries out is a violation) a radio capable of receiving police frequencies (scanner) UNLESS:
    1.  You have a permit to do so
    2.  You are a licensed HAM operator
    3.  You are a police officer

This means that by simply transporting a scanner in a vehicle, you could be in violation of the law.  Penalties include one or more of the following:
    A.  Confiscation of scanner
    B.  Jail time up to 1 year
    C.  Fine up to $1000

There is a solution however.  Click the below link to download the form to obtain a permit from the Michigan State Police.  This is free and takes about a week.  Carry this permit with you at ALL times.  Be warned: many police officers are unaware that it is legal to carry a scanner in your vehicle if you have a permit or are a licensed HAM operator.  It may be wise to obtain a copy of the law and carry that with you too.  Click the title above to see the law.
