A Little More about Ms. Sherrod

I was born in 1952 and raised in a small southwestern Michigan town, Paw Paw.  People my age and older will remember a Detroit Tiger named Charlie "Sunday" Maxwell who played in the 50's and 60's and was known for hitting homers during Sunday games. It is also the home of Michigan's oldest wineries, St. Julian and Warner's, and, no, I never have stomped grapes! The beginnings of my career as a librarian started here in Paw Paw when my family was named the "readingest family in town" due to all the library books we checked out! This picture shows that life's plans begin at a very early age. This is a picture of my younger sister, Bailey, and me as we enjoy what is apparently a very funny book.

My older sister is also a librarian at a college in Arizona and our mother was a library aide in the Paw Paw school system and then she began working in the Paw Paw Public Library until her retirement. So, you see that I come by my career naturally!

Since I turned 50, I have also taken up running (okay, jogging) for fitness and have entered a few races to keep things interesting. Here I am in Bradenton, Florida, two days after Christmas, 2003, in my first and only 5 mile run (I usually run in 5K races). It was
a really pretty run along the Manatee River and to the
Gulf shore and back. I finished at a run (always my main goal)
and got a really cool t-shirt.

In July, 2006, I tried my hand at throwing the javelin at the Michigan Senior Olympics held in Kalamazoo and qualified for the National Senior Games to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2007.  I have to admit I was the only one in my age group, but it was a start.  Also, in July I got notification that I was one of 300 runners across the state who were lucky enough to win a lottery drawing to join Governor Granholm in running across the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day.  What a thrill that was!  I carried a disposable camera on the run and
snapped some pretty fuzzy pictures while grinning for the entire 4.5 mile run.  I love the Bridge and look
forward to trying for the run again this year.
