Windows Update KB893066 and
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Problems

MMNet / EdZone have identified two problems related to Microsoft Windows XP updates which may disrupt your PC’s Internet browsing capabilities!

Issue 1

The first problem is related to Windows XP Security update KB893066: Downloading and installing the update will cause Internet browsing to be disrupted. If you are running Windows XP, we recommend uninstalling KB893066.

Removal Instructions:
Click on “Start”
Click “Control Panel”
Click “Add/Remove Programs”
Make sure “Show Updates” is checked
Scroll to the bottom and remove “Windows XP Hotfix - KB893066”
Reboot your computer
Right click on “My Computer”
Left click on “Properties”
Click on the “Automatic Updates” tab
Change the default “Download updates automatically” setting to “Notify me but don’t download updates automatically”

We will work on a solution other than the removal of the patch outlined above and post an appropriate update. We still recommend running and installing Windows Updates, but avoid KB893066 due to the Internet browsing problems it creates.

Issue 2

The second issue we have identified is related to Windows Updates trying to upgrade
Windows XP to Service Pack 2 (SP2). SP2 is fairly large, about 74 Mb, and would take several hours to download via a dial-up Internet connection. In many instances, the installation of SP2 over dial-up will be incomplete and therefore faulty. This may cause your PC to run slow and/or may cause Internet browsing to be non-functional. If your PC is showing SP2 under “Add/Remove Programs” and you are experiencing problems, we recommend removing SP2 and requesting a free CD directly from Microsoft to re-install it correctly.
